Funded by Enterprise Ireland, GMIT’s Medical and Engineering (MET) is an interdisciplinary Technology Gateway which provides world class solutions for the MedTech and general manufacturing sectors. The Gateway develops novel technologies relevant to both clinical research and MedTech companies operating in the design application phase. MET Technology Gateway Business Development Director Dr Eugene McCarthy says ‘the MET Technology Gateway primary focus is to support MedTech companies by delivering technology solutions which are close to market needs. Securing the ISO 9001:2015 is a significant achievement and strategically positions the Gateway as a central innovation support structure to companies operating in the medical device design space. In many ways, the real value of the ISO certification is that the Gateway activities with industry can be more directly utilised and offers potential clients greater confidence to work with researchers based in GMIT.
Based at GMIT’s Galway Dublin Rd campus, the MET Gateway has a significant client portfolio from HPSU companies to some of the world’s leading medical device manufacturing companies.
“The clinical research we carry out may affect global decisions on products or surgical procedures, therefore quality and traceability is key to our core activities., said Dr Rick Officer, Vice President of Research & Innovation, GMIT. ‘The certification in ISO 9001 is a testament of GMIT to build in quality at every stage of our research activities including those carried out with our client companies and funding agencies. The globally recognised ISO Quality standard identified procedural changes which the MET Gateway has introduced to strengthen its overall Quality Managements Systems processes framework, allowing the MET Gateway to have strong customer focus ensuring delivery of consistent, good quality innovative technologies and services, which in turn brings many benefits to Irish based companies’.
